The History
The production of Quinta da Vacaria wines began over 400 years ago, primarily for local consumption and export to large houses. Its history dates back to 1613 when Gaspar de Sousa purchased the property for 2,000 ducats. Originally a productive vineyard with over 70 barrels of wine annually, it later became part of the Jesuits’ assets in 1616 under D. Frei Luís Álvares de Távora. Over the centuries, the estate expanded to include vineyards, olive trees, watermills, a chapel, and housing – reflecting its rich agricultural and historical significance in the Douro Valley.
